What are CSI codes?
CSI MasterFormat is the industry-standard system for organizing commercial construction specifications, bid packages, and project manuals. Published by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) in partnership with Construction Specifications Canada (CSC), it groups every product, system, and trade into 24 numbered divisions. Architects, engineers, owners, and contractors across North America use it to write and read specs the same way — making bids comparable, estimates traceable, and submittals organized.
If you bid commercial work — federal, state, municipal, or private — you will see these codes on every project. Knowing where your scope lives in MasterFormat is the first step to reading a bid book quickly.

What's the difference between MasterFormat and UniFormat?
MasterFormat organizes by work result (the trade or product installed). UniFormat organizes by building element (foundation, exterior wall, roof). Bid books and project manuals use MasterFormat; conceptual estimating uses UniFormat.
Why are there gaps in the numbering (15–20, 24, 29–30)?
CSI intentionally reserved numbers when MasterFormat expanded from 16 to 50 divisions in 2004, leaving room for future categories without renumbering existing ones.
How do I find my NAICS code instead?
See our NAICS construction codes reference — required for SAM.gov, GSA, and state vendor registration.
