Affordability
Cheap housing is not the same as a cheap life.

A home price is easy to compare. A household’s cost of living is harder. The difference matters when you are deciding whether a move actually improves your finances.
Start with the full monthly commitment
Put rent or mortgage payments next to property taxes, insurance, utilities, transportation, and expected maintenance. Keep one-time moving and closing costs separate from recurring expenses. Get quotes for the actual address: a state or city average cannot tell you what your insurer will charge.
Income has to travel with the budget
Compare your likely take-home income, not only the salary headline. Job prospects, commuting time, household healthcare needs, and childcare arrangements can change the result. A cheaper market does not automatically preserve your income or reduce your largest recurring costs.
Use data for context, quotes for the decision
Census estimates describe housing and income at a geographic level and over a defined period. They are not current listings. BLS spending data can help you identify budget categories, but your own bills and local quotes are the stronger inputs for a personal moving decision.
